First off, welcome to the Fotographixs web site. This is where I like to share my thoughts and experiences on a number various subject as well as my photography.
This is a series of article in which I’ll share my thoughts and ideas on the various aspect of digital image workflow and management. These are just my ideas and they are not an end-all-be-all by any stretch of the imagination. In fact some of my ideas may not even work for you. If something I propose doesn’t work for you I hope that whatever it is will spark an idea that will help you develop your own methods. If you have any questions please send them on in and I’ll see what I can come up with. If you have comments, please use the comment form below and share them.
My goal here is to share what I have learned and hopefully help you in developing your own strategy and methods for managing your digital collection.
What to expect:
Here is the basic outline that I hope to follow during the course of my putting together these articles.
Introduction, what you’re reading right now
File naming Convention – a short basic description on how I name my files and why I do it this way
Directory/Folder structuring – a description on how I physically organize my image files and why
Lightroom organization – How I use Lightroom to organize my images
My workflow – A how to put it all together and make something out of it.
Whatever else I come up with.
Working Environment and Tools
My working environment is Windows 7 Home. I do NOT use a Mac nor Linux for any of my work. I have a small home network on which the desktop computers are connect as well as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) devise is attached. A NAS is a very stripped down file sever that just looks like another drive on your local computer. There are a number of very good ones on the market ranging in price from at $250.00 to several thousands of dollars. I also have an external drive attached to my desktop for additional storage.
I use basic windows commands for creating my directories/folders on the NAS and my local computer. Nothing fancy. I also use Adobe’s Photoshop Lightroom for my workflow and file management. In addition I also use Adobe’s Photoshop for some of the work I do on my images.
I will NOT be covering “how to…” for Windows, Lightroom, Photoshop or any other program. There are a number of very good books out there that do an excellent job on How To use the various tools mentioned in these article.
Enjoy.
